It is not often that I find myself taken aback by a film, but Glen Keane’s Duet has left me completely gobsmacked. Utterly beautiful, its stylistic simplicity and perfectly timed story arc is a reminder just how powerful animation can be in the hands of a master. Glen Keane was one of the animators in the middle of Disney’s renaissance from the 1990s onward — such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Tangled — and his design contributions (or, perhaps, the cross-pollination between animators at Disney) are made especially clear when you see how aesthetically similar the kiss at the end of Duet is to the one at the end of Beauty and the Beast. Well worth taking three minutes of your day to watch.
