“Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart” is coming to America

Like many film fans, I have often been dismayed at how few foreign films get screen time at theaters here in the US. While post-theatrical distribution for non-Hollywood films has improved in recent years, especially with services like Netflix and Hulu willing to stream a number of them, it is still a shame to miss seeing a film in the theater. There is nothing quite like experiencing a new movie on the big screen with a group of strangers; hearing people around you laugh, cry, gasp in astonishment or go silent with wonder changes your own encounter with the film, and there is no better way to get a sense of what works and what falls flat when trying to tell a story.

That is why I am so excited to hear that France’s Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart (“Jack et la mécanique du coeur”) will have a theatrical release in a few cities across the US. This film has been on my radar for a while now because of its striking aesthetics and dark(ish) storyline — I love animated films that aren’t afraid to address heavier subject matter — and I am thrilled to be able to see it in a theater. Those of you in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Scottsdale, Denver, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, Houston, Orlando and Tampa, be on the lookout for Jack on September 24th! Maybe I will see you there…
